If we expect the Body of Christ to have a significant impact in South Carolina, we as Christians have to focus our attention on the core infrastructure that supports our communities.
We have to look beyond the surface, though. Our state has made a massive investment in the last few years in our transportation infrastructure — rebuilding and expanding our interstates from Gaffney to Beaufort and nearly every city in between, deepening our harbor at the Port of Charleston to accommodate the massive new ships that feed the national supply chain, and bringing new investment to our airports to keep us competitive and connected. And there are broader aspects that many people don’t consider — infrastructure for things like safe drinking water, communications networks, and the power grid.
While all of these are important to support the 5.1 million people who call South Carolina home, there’s a infrastructure system that truly needs our focus in South Carolina as we enter 2022 — the Spiritual Infrastructure.
The Body of Christ — the “Big C” Church as we often call it — is, by it’s nature, an interwoven system of Christ followers, filled with the Holy Spirit, being the hands and feet of Jesus in and throughout our communities. We invest in each other, bridge relationships, and connect a world that is searching for a solution with a Savior who has the answers.
All too often, though, we get siloed — chiseling our niche under the guise of church denomination, political affiliation, or civic association. We all-too-easily slap a label on those who are “different” from us and miss the simple fact that God created each of us differently to complement, not compete with, each other.
Paul spelled this out clearly to the the church in Corinth when he said, “Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body… But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.” (1 Corinthians 12:12-13a, 18 NIV).
If we are going to impact people for Jesus in South Carolina, we have to invest together in the Spiritual Infrastructure of the Body of Christ in our state. Understanding that every church is uniquely different in each in community, we recognize the complementary ways we fit together — in God’s great design — to impact the spiritual temperature of our communities, and together address the real and growing needs that people are feeling and dealing with on a daily basis.
That’s where The Gospel meets the road, so to speak.
God has laid out an exciting road map for Palmetto Family for 2022 — a Spiritual Infrastructure plan that will begin to connect people together for the sake of the Gospel. As we roll out this plan in the coming days and weeks, we trust that you’ll see it is truly an investment worth making.
