HOMESCHOOLING IN
SOUTH CAROLINA

SOUTH CAROLINA LAW

South Carolina law requires one of three options to be chosen for oversight of a home school: one’s local public school district, S.C.A.I.H.S., or a “third option” association comprised of at least fifty members.
*Palmetto Family does not oversee, monitor or endorse any of the accountability options listed below.
Parents or guardians are encouraged to evaluate these options to determine which is best for their home school.

SC ASSOCIATION OF INDEPENDENT HOME SCHOOLS

HOMESCHOOL MEMBERSHIP GROUPS

SUPPORT AND RESOURCE GROUPS

These groups are not state approved accountability options for home schooling legally in South Carolina. Rather, these groups are intended to support and enrich your homeschooling experience. Benefits of joining one of these groups include field trips, classes, group activities, charitable service, outreach, and mutual encouragement. There are many support groups to choose from, so there’s probably one for you!

EQUAL ACCESS TO
INTERSCHOLASTIC ACTIVITIES

In 2012 South Carolina granted equal access to home school students to public school interscholastic activities. You will need to fill out a form notifying your local public school superintendent of your intention to participate. Feel free to use the equal access form below.

The South Carolina High School League website has a calendar of dates and deadlines for participation in sports during the upcoming school year. It is the student’s responsibility to attend the any try-outs or practices and provide the coach/school with any additional information or documentation necessary to verify that the student is eligible to compete (e.g., transcripts, physical exam, birth certificate, etc.).
